Chat apps use proportional fonts and trim spaces, which breaks normal text art. This redraws the pattern in braille dots instead. Every braille character is the same width in almost every font, and the blank one isn't treated as a space, so it keeps its shape in WhatsApp, Messenger, Discord, iMessage and the rest. It’s low resolution, so bold, simple patterns with big glyphs work best.
